An X user has revealed how his father was signed by Abiola Babes football club, owned by the late MKO Abiola, in the 80s.
According to @lexyy4real, his father, John Omughele, was impressive on the pitch during a game witnessed by Abiola, leading to contract talks and his eventual move to Abiola Babes.
He said the move could be likened to a talented player moving from a top club to a smaller one. It, however, paid off because his father's life changed for good.
He wrote, "Let me share a story about my life, many of you aren’t familiar with.
"My dad was an ex-football player in the 70s-90s. He started his football career as a striker with a local team in Warri, Mc Demort, and later he was transferred to International Breweries Ilesha.
"Due to his wonderful performance, he was snapped up by Bendel Insurance. He was the youngest player at that time at Bendel Insurance. He did so well against Shooting Stars in the FA Cup final, where the late MKO Abiola saw the game.
"Chief MKO Abiola was a lover of football, and immediately after the game, he came to Lagos and sent Bright Omokaro to Benin to negotiate the transfer of my dad, John Omughele, to join Abiola Babes.
"After several back and forth, my dad agreed to leave Bendel insurance to join Abiola Babes, and he was promised money for every goal he scored.
"Abiola sent his wife to get my dad a brand new car as he came with a very high profile. It was like leaving Arsenal to join Fulham. My dad was loved by Abiola and he comes regularly to the training ground to see my dad.
"Dad was signed in 1985..My mum met my dad in Surulere, Lagos, where he was living..
They got married and I was given birth to while he was playing for Abiola Babes…
"Chief Abiola gave my dad money for the wedding and also gave him money for my naming ceremony…
My life was a rollercoaster, and my dad became an idol when Abiola Babes played against Leventis in the final…
"I never knew poverty as a child, as Chief Abiola was very accessible to people."
