The Federal Government has announced plans to transform the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos into a transit hub, aiming to increase passenger traffic and develop the country’s aviation industry.
This development comes on the heels of Ethiopian Airlines launching its second daily flight to Lagos. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Dr Ibrahim Kana, disclosed the government’s plan during the launch of the new flight.
He stated that the establishment of a transit hub would help actualise the government’s dream of making Lagos the capital of Africa in terms of business and commerce. “We want to make Lagos a hub, and in no distant time, I can guarantee you that where we are standing will be a hub for many airlines,” Kana said.
He expressed appreciation for Ethiopian Airlines’ commitment to Nigeria, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic when the airline continued to operate flights into the country.
The Ministry of Aviation has extended an invitation to other airlines to operate in Nigeria, highlighting the country’s readiness for business. “Nigeria is ready for business, and we welcome all international airlines to fly into and out of our country,” Kana said.
Ethiopian Airlines’ Area Manager in Nigeria, Mrs Firiehiwot Mekonnen, announced plans to support tourism development in Nigeria. She disclosed that the airline would unfold its plan to support tourism in the country, citing the recent success of festivals such as Detty December, Carnival Calabar, Ojude Oba, and Durbar Festivals.
The second daily flight to Lagos is expected to boost the airline’s frequency to Nigeria, with 31 weekly flights from all stations, including Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Enugu. The airline’s commitment to Nigeria spans over 65 years, and it has been serving the country since its independence in 1960.
