The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has extended the service period of corps member Ushie Uguamaye, also known as Raye, for criticising authorities in government.
MyNigeria reported that Raye made several TikTok videos in which she described Lagos as smelly and also slammed the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
However, her TikTok challenge, which went viral, with many youths joining in to air their grievances with the country, was regarded as contravening the laws guiding youth corps members.
When she was summoned for disciplinary action, she showed up with activist Omoyele Sowore and lawyers who met the absence of NYSC authorities after she made a buzz about the issue on social media.
While the dust settled, many thought the last had been heard and that Raye had gone scot free.
However, Sowore has provided an update months after the incident, which indicates that the NYSC has issued a punishment to Raye by extending her service period by two months.
Sowore wrote on X, "This @officialABAT Tinubu regime might go down with the Rita Raye’s National Youth Service Corps @officialnyscng matter. This is not acceptable, we will mobilize down to the Passing Out Parade except Rita is allowed to complete her NYSC national service without let or hindrance. #NoRitaRayeNOPOP #RevolutionNow
"The @officialnyscng is not Tinubu's Personal Service, but a National Service enforced by law on young graduates; therefore, no one should be penalized for speaking up against bad governance. Standing up against tyranny is also a form of National Service. #NoRITARAYENoPOP!"
