Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, has solicited continued support of the World Bank and other International Organisations and donor Agencies to assist in rebuilding Mokwa town following the devastating flood that ravaged the community

The governor made the call when he received a delegation from the World Bank and United Nations Development Program UNDP on a condolence visit at the Niger State Liaison Office Abuja.

Bago said Mokwa needs urgent attention and immediate support for the communities largely affected. He said the State Government, in response to the federal Government's assistance, have provided 200 hectares of land to provide sites and services so that community members can be relocated in earnest.

He reiterated that a lot of resources have been lost in the area and remains hopeful that the relationship and partnership between the State Government and the World Bank will eventually bring succour to the affected people.

Bago, while appreciating the World Bank and the United Nations for their continuous support, urged the World Bank to expedite action on the $10 million gully erosion site in Mokwa, as the State Government has already set aside ten billion naira counterpart fund.

The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohammed Malick Fall, while commiserating with the governor over the Mokwa incident, said many UN Agencies have been on the ground in Mokwa helping the victims while also reassuring him that the United Nations will continue to support the Government in its recovery process

World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Tamir Samad, described the Mokwa incident as a tragedy, adding that Niger State is one of the active states in World Bank programs, and disclosed that the World Bank will re-assess the situation in Mokwa and see how to offer medium term solutions in watershed management, school rehabilitation among others.
