Onyedika, Brugge chase Belgian double in league decider

Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika and Club Brugge will aim to complete a memorable domestic double when they face Royal Antwerp in Sunday’s (today’s) crucial league decider at the Jan Breydel Stadion, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The championship hopefuls need all three points to stand their best chance of snatching the title on the final day from Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, who currently lead by just one point in one of the closest battles in Belgian Pro League history.

Brugge’s quest for glory comes fresh off their Belgian Cup triumph earlier this month, where Onyedika played a key role as they beat rivals Anderlecht 2-1 in a thrilling final at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels.

The 24-year-old midfielder started and played for 74 minutes, helping control the pace of the game despite receiving an early yellow card.

Romeo Vermant’s brace secured Brugge’s 12th Belgian Cup title, with the 21-year-old striker finishing off crosses from Hugo Siquet and Christos Tzolis.

A domestic double – which Brugge last achieved in the 1995/96 season is now tantalizingly close. However, with little margin for error, Nicky Hayen’s men must first overcome an Antwerp side that will be desperate to end a largely underwhelming campaign on a high.

Antwerp have been in excellent form, winning 10 of their last 12 matches across all competitions. Their only defeat in that period was a costly one to Union Saint-Gilloise one month ago, which saw them relinquish the top spot in the standings.

Onyedika’s side has dominated this fixture recently, with six wins from the last 10 matches. Their home record against Antwerp makes for even better reading, boasting seven wins from eight home matches since March 2021.

Onyedika has been one of Brugge’s most consistent performers this season, making 33 league appearances and starting 29 matches while playing over 2,200 minutes. The former Midtjylland player, who joined from the Danish club in 2022, scored his only league goal of the campaign in a 7-0 win over Sint-Truiden in November.

His impressive displays have attracted interest from top European clubs, including Manchester City, AC Milan, and PSG, though his immediate focus remains on helping Brugge secure what would be their 20th league crown.

Royal Antwerp arrive at the Jan Breydel Stadium on a wretched run of just two wins from their last nine outings. Having had the opportunity to do Club Brugge a massive favour in their last league outing against Union Saint-Gilloise, Andries Ulderink’s men were instead trounced 4-0 for a second straight defeat at the Bosuilstadion since the start of May.
