Nottingham Forest coach Nuno Espirito Santo has affirmed that Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi underwent a successful operation and is recovering well.

News broke on Tuesday that Awoniyi was in an induced coma after an operation to correct a ruptured intestine. He sustained the injury under controversial circumstances during Nottingham Forest's 2-2 draw against Leicester City last weekend.

Nonetheless, it was eventually that the operation was successful and Awoniyi had woken up on Friday.

Ahead of Nottingham Forest's game against West Ham on Sunday, coach Espirito shared updates concerning Awoniyi and how the situation is affecting the team.
“He went to surgery and surgery went well, thank God,” Espirito Santo said, per The Sun.

“He is on observation now. He is recovering. We are concerned but we are positive. It has been very difficult on us and on everybody.”

Obviously, Awoniyi will not be able to play against West Ham on Sunday, and Espirito Santo will hope that his situation does not drop the morale of the team.

Taiwo Awoniyi's injury comes at a bad time for Nottingham Forest, as they are chasing a Champions League qualification spot. Hence, they need all the attacking firepower they can get with two games left.

Moreover, Chris Wood has not been firing on all cylinders since his injury some weeks ago, and having Awoniyi would provide Nottingham Forest some much-needed firepower

After playing West Ham this weekend, Nottingham Forest will face Chelsea in their final game of the season next week.
