Nigerian international and Nottingham Forest striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, has said he started paying tithe right from when he was in secondary school.

According to him, whenever someone gave him money, no matter how little, he always ensured to pay the tithe in church.

Awoniyi said this when he appeared on the Rash 4 Christ podcast, hosted by Super Falcons player, Rasheedat Ajibade.

He said, "For me, most things that I do, I do them from my perspective. I'm an individual who knows what he wants. For the things that were written aforetime, he says they are for our knowledge and they are for our doctrine. But when we look at the Bible, what does it say about tithing?

"For me, I'll be honest with you, when I was in my secondary school days, if someone dashed me N5 or N20, you know how small that is, I'll pay the tithe in church. When I didn't even know what millions are like, dash me N5,000 or N10,000, I'll pay the tithe in church. That's a gift that you gave to me. That's what I've been taught, and that's what I've been doing growing up."

Further speaking, Awoniyi stated that he doesn't allow the abuse and misuse of tithes by pastors to get in the way of his obedience to the commandment of God.

He said, "But people have come to the knowledge of 'when you pay tithe to the pastor, he will spend it'. It's between the pastor and God. It's none of my own business. My own truth is that I've been doing it before I even became Taiwo Awoniyi of today."
