Leading up to the nationwide protest on October 1, 2024, the Lagos State chapter of the EndBadGovernance movement is urging Nigerians to join in speaking out against the economic hardships in Nigeria.
The protest tagged, "National Day of Survival," aims to demand an end to the struggles faced by Nigerians, including workers, students, the elderly and the youth.
Activists, led by the National Coordinator of the Education Rights Campaign (ERC), Hassan Soweto, listed ten demands for President Bola Tinubu to address in order to alleviate the plights of Nigerians.
This was announced at a press conference held at the International Press Centre in Ogba, Lagos on September 26.
Soweto said: “We urge the government to say no to the neo-liberal policies of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), reverse the fuel price and electricity tariff to pre-May 29, 2023, levels, and make government-owned refineries work to guarantee affordable petroleum products."
The demands also included reducing food prices, supporting farmers for sustainable food production, and securing the unconditional release of political prisoners, including Michael Adaramoye (Lenin), Sodiq Mosiu, Daniel Akande, and other #EndBadGovernance protesters, journalists, and whistleblowers.
Soweto warned that if these demands are not met, there will be further protests that will challenge the administration.
Security and better compensation for soldiers fighting on the frontlines, as well as support for their families, were also included in the demands by the activists.
