The former Minister of Environment, Lawrencia Laraba-Mallam has urged women to participate in politics, acknowledging that women are better managers.

The Minister spoke during a sensitization seminar organized by the Dignity of Women Commission at St. Catholic Church in Kaduna.

The theme of the seminar was "Women's participation in politics and guide for direction.” She raised concerns over the current state of the economy.

On Sunday, August 18, 2024, she bemoaned the high rate of crime, especially kidnapping, trafficking, and other illegal activities being carried out by the youth due to unemployment in the country.

Madam Laraba-Mallam further called on women to join politics to build a better nation. She also dismissed claims that politics is a dirty game, which she believes is used to discredit people from venturing into politics.

According to the Minister, more women’s voices are needed in the Upper Chamber to condemn the ongoing rot in Nigeria.

“We are just beginning to know the truth, and we must be very serious about this. God willing, we shall succeed.

“The drivers of the economy are 95% men. We all know that women are better managers; look at the homes, give a woman a little milk, and she will cater for her family very well.

“No wonder it is said that if you train a woman, you have trained a nation,” the minister said.

From the 2023 presidential and national assembly elections, 15 women were represented in the 423 legislative seats, as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

On the other hand, men got a total of 408 seats, representing 96.5% compared to women’s 3.5%.
