Nigerians prepare for August 1-10 protests Nigerians prepare for August 1-10 protests

As Nigerians prepare for a planned nationwide protest against the bad governance in Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu, some individuals and groups have expressed their dismay about the move.

The youth have programmed the protest to take place from August 1 to August 10, 2024, in response to rising insecurity, inflation, fuel price increases, and a high cost of living.

The protest has attracted various opinions from individuals and groups. While some appeal to Nigerians to give President Bola Tinubu more time to address the issues, others claim the protest will lead to anarchy.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on Nigerians to consider alternative means of expressing their grievances. In a statement shared on Friday, July 26, 2024, the group expressed sympathy for the pain, anger, and frustration experienced by the public, adding that the planned protest could be hijacked by hoodlums.

The Independent Media and Policy Initiative (IMPI) believes that while protests are legitimate in a democracy, they could be used as cover for insurrection and anarchy. Niyi Akinsiju, the chairman of IMPI policy analyst group, noted that some individuals and groups were allegedly laying the groundwork for insurrection under the guise of a peaceful protest.

The Niger Delta leader and Chairman of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, has also urged the organizers to shelve the proposed nationwide protest.

According to Tompolo, the country's hardships did not start in the past year of President Bola Tinubu's administration, but have been ongoing for a long time.

The Minister of Youth Development, Dr. Jamila Ibrahim, has appealed to the youths to reconsider their plan to protest for ten days starting August 1.

Ibrahim stated that the country needs peace and stability to achieve its goals. She made this statement when members of the newly constituted National Students Management Council (NSMC) visited her in Abuja.

The Defence Headquarters has expressed concern that the upcoming protest poses a potential threat to the nation, as it may lead to anarchy and a reign of terror. The Director of Defence Media Operations, Edward Buba, made this known during a briefing with the media on the operations of the armed forces on Thursday, July 25, 2024, in Abuja.

Traditional rulers, along with several others, have called for calm and asked for the protest to be postponed as they plan to address the prevailing economic hardships in Nigeria. The Dein of Agbor, HRM Benjamin Keagborekuzi, stated, "We will listen to our youths because they are the future. The power and strength of Nigeria lie with the young people."

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Uche Nwosu, has appealed to Nigerians to halt the planned nationwide protest and allow President Bola Tinubu to address the country's issues. Nwosu, the chief of staff to former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha, emphasized that it would be unfair to expect a government that has only been in office for a year to quickly resolve issues that have plagued the country for decades.

Other notable personalities have also urged Nigerians to be patient with the Tinubu-led government to resolve the crisis.

President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to stop the protest, stating that the organizers do not love the country and are fueled by hatred and anger to destabilize the nation.

Some youths in the some states have revealed their intentions not to participate in the upcoming protests.

Some Governors have also announced that their states will not be available for the August 1 protest as they put security on alert.
