President Bola Tinubu’s administration has reportedly signed the controversial Samoa agreement with conditions for supporting and recognizing the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT+) community.
This was revealed by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, during the signing at a reception organized by the European Union in Abuja on Monday, July 1, 2024.
In a publication cited in Daily Trust, the Samoa agreement reportedly has some LGBTQ+ clauses as conditions for getting financial support from some societies.
Responding to the criticism, Bagudu’s media assistant, Bolaji, Adebiyi, dismissed claims that the document signed by the federal government contained strictly economic development for Nigeria.
Adebiyi stated that LGBTQ+ or same-sex marriage were not mentioned in the document.
According to him, what Bagudu signed concerned a $150 billion trade component, and it would be wrong to imply that Nigeria had accepted LGBTQ+ tendencies.
Speaking on behalf of the Islamic community, the Administrative Secretary of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Abubakar Akande, said the council would not welcome such an agreement.
Akande insists that the NSCIA's stance on same-sex marriage or LGBTQ+ remains unchanged. “We cannot agree to what is against the injunction of our Creator, Allah, on this matter, and which also disrespects Nigeria’s sovereignty.”
Nigerians have taken to social media to share their thoughts on the recent deal.
