Joe Igbokwe, a leading member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) says the southeast deserves one more state.

The APC chieftain was reacting to renewed agitation for the creation of more states in the region.

In a Facebook post, he wrote, “Nigeria is still owing the Southeast additional one state and one governor.”

He made this known when a bill seeking to create an Adada State passed its first reading in the Senate on Tuesday.

The bill, which has been cited as the “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Bill, 2024 (SB. 482)” was sponsored by the lawmaker representing Enugu North Senatorial District, Senator Okey Ezea.

According to Ezea, the bill seeks to amend Section 3(1) and the First Schedule, Part 1 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to allow for the creation of another state in the South-East region.

The bill for the creation of Etiti State also passed its first reading in the House of Representatives.

If the bill scales through, Etiti will be created from Anambra, Abia, Imo, Enugu and Ebonyi States.

Five members of the House of Representatives, Amobi Ogah, Miriam Onuoha, Kama Nkemkama, Chinwe Nnabuife, and Anayo Onwuegbu, presented the proposal to form a new state from the five states in the region.

Etiti will consist of 11 Local Government Areas selected from the mentioned states with the capital city designated to be situated in Lokpanta.
