Abdulmumuni Abiola, the son of the late Kudirat Abiola, says he was in the country when his mother was assassinated. He made the statement while recounting moments before her assassination.
Nigerians nationwide are marking the 28th anniversary of the assassination of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, the wife of the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 election, Chief MKO Abiola.
During an exclusive interview on Arise TV on Tuesday, June 4, Abdulmumuni revealed that he also witnessed situations when his father was arrested by soldiers in their home.
"I was in the country when my mother was assassinated. I was here when the soldiers came to the house to arrest my father. I have seen things, I might not be able to put it in context, but I was aware of what was going on and the position she stood for. I thank God that she was able to do what she did," he said.
Recall that Abiola and her driver were shot at point-blank range by unknown assailants near her home in Lagos on June 4, 1996. She later died in the hospital, while the driver was reportedly wounded.
Meanwhile, civil society groups, under the umbrella bodies of Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND) and Women Arise (WA), have called on governments at the federal, state, and local levels to prioritize consensus building and development over political rivalries. They emphasized that democracy must deliver tangible results.
This call was made on Monday in a statement titled “Kudirat Abiola: 28 years after,” jointly signed by the President of KIND, Dr. Hafsat Abiola, and her counterpart for WA, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin. They paid tributes to the late Kudirat, describing her as a champion of democracy and human rights in Nigeria. They noted that her sacrifice, along with others who fought for democracy, serves as a reminder to Nigerians that such victories are hard-won.
