Kano Gov Yusuf rejects Appeal Court’s judgment, heads to Supreme Court

The Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf has revealed his intentions to head to the Supreme Court after the Appeal Court sacked him from office.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC declared Abba Yusuf as the winner of the March 18 governorship election in the state.

However, on Friday, November 17, the appellate court in Abuja upheld the nullification of the election of Yusuf of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) by the state election petition tribunal.

The three-member panel tribunal, led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan-Osadebay, held that some ballot papers that were relied upon to declare Yusuf as the winner of the gubernatorial contest, were neither signed nor stamped by the INEC.

It proceeded to declare 165,663 of the votes that were credited to the NNPP candidate as invalid.

Following the deduction of the said invalid votes, Yusuf, who was initially declared winner of the governorship poll with a total of 1,019,602 votes, had his tally reduced to 853, 939 votes.

With the development, his closest rival and candidate of the APC, Ganuwa, emerged as the winner of the election with 890,705 votes.

As a result, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf rejected the Court of Appeal judgment, and revealed that he is heading to the Supreme Court.

Making this known on his X page, Yusuf said.

“After careful study and rigorous stakeholders engagement, my team and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), have decided to approach the Supreme Court on the miscarriage of justice, delivered by the Appeal Court, yesterday in Abuja.

“We are optimistic that the Supreme Court will by the grace of Allahu SWT, will set aside these miscarriages of justice by the Tribunal and the Appeal Court, and reaffirm our mandate, as given by the good people of Kano State.

“Furthermore, I call on the good people of the Kano State to continue to go about their legitimate businesses, as we have taken all the necessary measures to ensure the security of their lives and property as a cardinal responsibility.

“Finally, I call on the good people of the state and other well-meaning Nigerians to continue to pray for Allah’s mercy and protection to save the state from the injustice of mischief makers, who are desperately scheming to hijack power through the back door and return the state to the dark ages.”
