Nigerians rain curses on Tinubu's government over soaring prices of medication

Several Nigerians have been left in pain following the hike in pharmaceutical products across the country.

In a series of posts sighted on social media, Nigerians lament the high costs of medications.

Many complain how they have been unable to afford their prescriptions and other drugs due to the huge prices on the drugs.

Displeased by the situation, Nigerians rained curses on President Tinubu following his announcement of the removal of subsidy which has had severe effect on their finances.

An Ampiclox which was sold at N1000 is currently been sold at N13,000. Seretide sold at N5000 is been sold for N70,000, a Ventolin inhaler sold at N2800, is been sold for N8000 also Augmentin 625mg, an antibiotic medicine which was sold at N4500 is currently been sold for N25,000.

According to reports, the pharmaceutical medications above are known to be GlaxoSmithKline GSK Products.

Recall that the pharmaceutical company announced that it would discontinue operations in Nigeria, ending its 51-year existence in the country.

The pharmaceutical giant said it would adopt a distributor-led model to supply the country with its drugs.

"“In our published Q2 results we disclosed that the GSK UK Group has informed GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Nigeria PLC of its strategic intent to cease commercialisation of its prescription medicines and vaccines in Nigeria through the GSK local operating companies and transition to a third-party direct distribution model for its pharmaceutical products,” the firm said.

“The Haleon Group has also separately informed the board of its intent to terminate its distribution agreement in the coming months and to appoint a third-party distributor in Nigeria for the supply of its consumer healthcare products.

“For the above reasons, and having, together with GSK UK, evaluated various other options, the board of GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Nigeria Plc has concluded that there is no alternative but to cease operations," GSK Nigeria said.

Reacting to the hike in medications, some Nigerians took to social media to vent their anger.
