Organised labour begins indefinite strike, gives other details

NLC protest NLC protest

Organised labour, consisting of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have asked their members to embark on a nationwide strike over the beating of the NLC president, Joe Ajaero.

According to The Nation, the unions ordered their affiliates to adhere to the resolution of the National Executive Council of the NLC and implement it from Tuesday, November 14.

Festus Osifo, the TUC president, who spoke to journalists on Monday, November 12, disclosed that the nationwide industrial action would continue until “government at all levels wake up to their responsibility.”

The organised labour had earlier announced that its members would embark on a nationwide strike over attacks on the unions' leaders during a protest barely a week before the governorship election in Imo state.

Ajaero had mobilised some labour leaders to protest in Imo state, but some unknown thugs attacked them, and the NLC president was thoroughly beaten and admitted to the hospital for some days.

Governor Uzodimma apologised to NLC over the beating of Ajaero

Barely 24 hours before the election, Governor Hope Uzodimma apologised to the NLC for what happened in his state, adding that he was not aware that Ajaero and his team would be staging a protest in Imo state.

Giving an account of the attack on the workers, Ajaero said all relevant security agencies in the state were informed about the protest and that he was handed over to about seven thugs by the police.

He said the thugs were the ones who beat him during the protest.
