Nigeria has cut its power supply to Niger Republic following the ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum.

A daily supply of 150 megawatts, MW of electricity to Niger was disconnected as part of efforts by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to restore democracy to the country.

The disconnection was carried out by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Tuesday night.

A source close to the TCN who spoke to Vanguard under the condition of anonymity confirmed the report.

“It is true Niger was disconnected from the national grid last night based on the instruction of the government. Nigeria used to supply 150 megawatts, MW of power to Niger.

“It is total disconnection in line with ECOWAS moves to restore democracy in that country.”

ECOWAS Heads of State headed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday, July 30 gave the military junta a seven-day ultimatum to reinstate President Bazoum or face military action.

Despite the stern warning from the regional bloc, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Abdel-Fatau Musah noted that military intervention will be the last resort.

“(The) military option is the very last option on the table, the last resort, but we have to prepare for the eventuality.”
