Saudi King’s Cup victory: I’m not done winning trophies – Ighalo

Odion Ighalo Odion Ighalo

Odion Ighalo, arguably Nigeria’s most successful player of the last decade is not done with his modest achievements in Saudi Arabia as he is setting sights on winning more trophies after adding another title to his cabinet.

On Friday, the Nigeria international helped his Saudi outfit Al-Hilal SFC to lift the Saudi King’s Cup 2023, beating Al Wheda on penalties after a normal duration thereafter, an extra-time that ended 1-1 stalemate.

The victory marks Ighalo’s second major trophy with Al-Hilal, having already clinched the Saudi Professional League title in his debut season with the club.

Speaking shortly after the victory, the former Watford and Manchester United ace pledged to win more trophies with Al-Hilal.

“This is a trophy I have been praying to win since I came to this country (Saudi Arabia),” the 33-year-old Nigeria international exclusively told SportingSun during a WhatsApp conversation at the weekend.

“I have already won almost everything possible here. But that notwithstanding, I want to keep winning many more and win this cup many more times. It’s the first one and I can feel how special it is to me.

“The atmosphere was so electric from the moment we came out to warm up until the last blast of the referee’s whistle. It was a wonderful feeling and I am overwhelmed about it.”

Ighalo has won many individual trophies since his arrival in Saudi Arabia in January 2022 including Saudi Pro League Team of the Year, Saudi Pro League Top Scorer as well as several Saudi Pro League Player of the Month Awards.
