My father was a politician - Dangote reveals

Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote has revealed that his father Mohammed Dangote was a politician and businessman.

Dangote who is worth more than $ 14 billion made this known in an interview that has gone viral.

The entrepreneur in the video said that his great-grandfather, Alhassan Dantata was the richest man in West Africa in the 1940s.

He said: "I am from a wealthy family, my late great-grandfather in the 1940s was the richest West African, my late grandfather was one of the wealthiest Nigerians. The family name is Dantata, and that's from my maternal side."

"My father too was also fairly rich but he was into business and politics. But I know David, one thing I am proud of is that I didn't inherit any money from my dad. I built everything from scratch. Well, he left in his will whatever I inherited in assets but I gave all the charity."

Dangote's father, Mohammed Dangote, was a business associate of Dantata. Through his mother, he is the great-grandson of Alhassan Dantata, the richest person in West Africa at the time of his death in 1955.

Dangote's brother, Sani was also a businessman.
