He died after an unsuccessful surgery following a brief illness.

Below are some facts you probably didn't know about him

1. Education and financial issues:

Innocent Arthur Egwim was intelligent and loved to learn as a child despite coming from a modest background. He could only manage to complete his secondary schooling due to budgetary constrains.

Remarkably, he gained admission to study law at the UNN in 1982, but could not pursue this dream due to the family’s financial challenges, and this led to his venturing into business.

Despite being a prosperous businessman, Innocent Arthur Egwim never relented in his efforts to show his devotion to education and service to his community.

2. Political career:

Until his death, he was the member representing Ideato North Constituency at the state House of Assembly.

He was first elected to serve in the state House of Assembly in 2015 under the APC ticket and was reelected in 2019 under the Action Alliance banner.

At the recently concluded National Assembly elections, he ran for the House of Representatives position on the All Progressives Grand Alliance ticket, but lost.

3. Law profession:

The deceased, who was a lawyer by profession, participated actively in the state parliament's eight and night assemblies.

His undying love for education led him back to the university at the age of 40 where he read law, went to Law School, took a masters’ degree and had a doctorial certificate at UNILAG.

4. Chief Whip:

He was a one-time Chief Whip of the Imo State House of Assembly and served as House Committee Chairman on Finance and Public Accounts, House Committee Chairman on Chieftaincy Affairs, and Autonomous Communities and House Committee Chairman on Judiciary.

5. Family life:

He was happily married with children and grandchildren until his sudden demise.

6. Cause of death:

Egwim died after undergoing surgery in a private hospital in Lagos.

The high-ranking lawmaker reportedly got sick recently and had surgery, but she passed away on Monday, March 27, not long after.

The Speaker of the state legislature, Emeka Nduka, has expressed his condolences to the late lawmaker's immediate family, colleagues, the Ideato people, and the entire state.

He also said that his passing would leave a void in the Imo State assembly.
