'Flawed election' - How popular British weekly newspaper reported Tinubu's election victory

The victory of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has generated mixed reactions and reports across the globe.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Bola Tinubu the winner of the polls that have been described as flawed by some Nigerians and observer groups.

While the APC believe they won the election fairly, the international media have reported otherwise.

Early today, an unidentified Austrian portal in its headline wrote: "Bola Tinubu, an oil billionaire, and drug dealer elected as Nigeria’s President".

The same controversial headline was given by The Economist, a British weekly newspaper printed in demitab format and published digitally. Its headline reads: "Bola Tinubu, Nigeria's political kickmaker wins flawed elections"

Since his victory was announced and the certificate of return issued to him, world leaders including French President, Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Ghana's Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo and the United States have sent in their congratulatory messages.

Mr Tinubu defeated 17 other candidates who took part in the election. He scored a total of 8,794,726 votes, the highest of all the candidates, thus meeting the first constitutional requirement to be declared the winner.

INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, who announced the final results in the early hours of Wednesday in Abuja, said Atiku Abubakar of the PDP came second in the election.

Atiku polled a total of 6,984,520 votes in the election.

Peter Obi of the Labour Party came third in the election with a total of 6,101,533 votes while Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP came fourth with 1,496,687 votes.
