Sunday Igboho likely to get asylum in the U.K - Lawyer

Barrister Leesi Ebenezer Olarewaju, a Nigerian lawyer practising in the U.S state of Texas presumed to be part of the legal representatives of Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho has said the separatist leader will not return to Nigeria as his legal counsel has requested asylum from the British government.

This is according to a post cited on Facebook which was accredited to the lawyer.

He said in the post: "Sunday Adeyemo Igboho can only be returned back to Nigeria if only he is found to have broken any law in Benin Republic. Sunday Igboho as we know did not break any law in Benin."

He continued: "He was arrested under false alarm raised by the Nigerian government. We are on top of the situation right now. We have successfully notified the British Government on the dangers of letting Sunday Adeyemo returned to Nigeria where his life is at risk."

"We believe that before the end of today, Britain would have granted his request for asylum on good faith," he added.

The identity of the Facebook user is protected.

Sunday Igboho was arrested in Cotonou, Benin Republic by security operatives in the West African country.

Igboho was arrested Monday night after fleeing Nigeria to evade arrest by Nigeria's secret police.

A source privy to his departure from Nigeria said he had perfected plans to secretly escape from Nigeria through Cotonou and was heading to Germany.

He was, however, nabbed by security operatives in the neighboring country.

A source privy to the incident, said, "Sunday Igboho has been arrested in Cotonou. He was arrested about an hour ago."

Meanwhile, The Nations reports that the Benin Republic is likely to reject extraditing Sunday Adeniyi Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho after his arrest in Cotonou.

This comes after the leader of the umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination groups, Ilana Omo Oodua (IOO), Professor Emeritus Banji Akintoye, told The Nation Yoruba Patriots are working hard to provide assistance for Ighoho towards preventing his extradition to Nigeria because “Benin Republic is a land that respects the rules of law”.

He called on all Yoruba people within and beyond the shores of Nigeria to ensure their ancestral land is not defeated by invaders.
