Nigerians sit and complain but do nothing - Cardinal Onaiyekan

Cardinal John Onaiyekun Cardinal John Onaiyekun

Cardinal John Onaiyekun, the emeritus Archbishop of the Abuja Catholic Archdiocese, stated on Tuesday that Nigerians are accustomed to sitting and grumbling about everything while failing to challenge poor leaders.

Nigerians, according to the preacher, must keep political office holders on their toes and hold them accountable.

This assertion was made by Onaiyekan in Abuja at the North Central Zonal Dialogue Conference, which was organized by the Lux Terra Leadership Foundation in collaboration with the Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy, and Development.

“Nigerians have grown accustomed to sitting and whining about everything,” he remarked. They whine about politicians and the government, but they don't take their position as citizens' representatives seriously.

“This makes the leaders pleased, and they take full advantage of the meek nature of the majority of Nigerians.”

When Nigerians participate in governance as citizens, he continued, leaders in the country will be on their toes and will live up to their obligations.

The cleric reminded politicians that they had placed themselves under God's judgment whenever they swore their oath of office with either the Bible or the Quran.
