Again, gunmen kill cops, burn police vehicles in A’Ibom

Bandits yesterday invaded the Divisional Police Office at Ibiaku Ntok Okpo, Ikono Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State and killed two police officers and set police vans on fire.

Likewise, THISDAY learnt, a female police officer was injured while five vehicles belonging to the police division were set ablaze during the attack which occurred around 3:00 a.m.

In a statement yesterday, the Press Secretary to the Chairman of Ikono LGA, Nsisong Ntuk said a flag hoisted at the police station was also carted away.

The statement said: “Today, Saturday, May 1, the chairman of Ikono LGA, Nyakno Okoibu received a distress call about the invasion of the police station at Ibiaku Ntok Okpo by criminals alleged to be members of the Eastern Security Network by 3:00 a.m.”

During the ensuing melee, the statement said two police officers were killed, five vehicles burnt; a police woman on night duty was critically injured, the flag hoisted at the police station stolen and destructive acts carried out by the invaders.

On getting the information, the statement said the council chairman and the council’s Chief Security Officer swung into action by visiting the scene of the mayhem with his retinue of aides.

The statement explained that proactive measures had been taken to ensure that normalcy is restored to the area of attack and other parts of the Local Government Area.

The statement called on the people of Ikono to remain calm as necessary security measures are being taken to restore normalcy to the affected areas.

Confirming the incident the Public Relations officer, Odiko Macdon, said the situation was being assessed by the policemen mobilised to the scene.

He explained that there was an attack on our Ikono base, saying it was not razed down and police officers drafted to the scene were assessing the situation already.

This is coming barely five days after gunmen on Tuesday, 27 April, 2021, stormed Ika police station and killed a female officer, one Esther Akpan and a special police constabulary, Isonuyo Paul while returning home in a Volvo car.
