Herdsmen must embrace ranching, obey anti-open grazing law– Benue

Benue state Governor, Samuel Ortom Benue state Governor, Samuel Ortom

The Chief Press Secretary to the Benue State Governor, Terver Akase,  on Sunday said that the state will not receive armed herdsmen fleeing from South-West.

Akase stated that the state Governor, Samuel Ortom, had on several occasions said any cattle owner who wanted to reside in the state must ranch his animals.

A report had earlier quoted Akase as saying that herdsmen in the state must be ready to obey the state anti open grazing law.

He had said, “As long as they (Fulani herdsmen)  are ready to ranch their cattle and obey the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law of the state,  Benue State  will have no problem with them.”

Akase reiterated the government stand on Sunday saying, “Benue State will  not receive armed herdsmen fleeing from the South-West. As Governor Samuel Ortom has repeatedly stated, any cattle owner who wants to reside in Benue State must ranch his animals. Open grazing remains prohibited in the state.”
