Uruagu-Nnewi, Obi Charles Afam Obi, was kidnapped by suspected gunmen. Uruagu-Nnewi, Obi Charles Afam Obi, was kidnapped by suspected gunmen.

The Nnewi community of Ekwusigo local government area in Anambra state has been plunged into panic following the kidnap of Uruagu-Nnewi, Obi Charles Afam Obi.

The 41-year-old monarch was kidnapped after his vehicle was attacked by his abductors while he was reportedly coming back from a burial ceremony.

According to Daily Sun citing a report from witnesses, the kidnappers shot sporadically into the air to scare people away before Obi Afam was whisked away.

Although police were unable to confirm the kidnapping case, Charles Nwoye, who is the president-general of the community said the monarch's car was truly kidnapped.

He added that a 74-year-old mother of the traditional ruler who was with him was, however, not touched, and she has since returned home. Nwoye said efforts are ongoing to rescue the monarch as necessary security agencies have been briefed.

"The family source told me that he was abducted in the late hours of Friday, February 13, on his way from a burial ceremony.

"I have contacted the Nnewi Police Area Command. I have also contacted the DSS and other relevant authorities for necessary actions."
