Football fans have expressed dismay at the performance of the Golden Eaglets at the ongoing WAFU B Championship in Lome, Togo.

The Nigerian U-17 team booked a spot in the semi-final of the championship after Ivory Coast defeated Ghana’s Black Starlets 3-1 in Group B’s final game.

Five-time world champions Eaglets ended the group stage with one point, the same as Ghana, but advanced on superior goals aggregate.

Fatai Amoo’s side, who have yet to win a game at the tourney, play Burkina Faso in the semi-finals on Friday.

A win will see them qualify for the 2021 U-17 AFCON in Morocco in July.

Fans reacted to the team’s outing with displeasure.

“Two games without a win is not good enough for a team that is hoping to play at the U-17 AFCON or World Cup. I know their preparation was shoddy but they were bad in their first two games,” Jamiu Akinde, a photographer, said.

“We keep depending on luck. It didn’t work for the Flying Eagles the last time. All Nigerian football teams have been doing badly since January 2020,” Ben Ugbana tweeted.

Twitter user, Sunny Osaze wrote, “Congratulations to us but we need to stop waiting for the calculator to progress in competitions.”

Tunde Badmus added, “I hope this qualification will be an opportunity for the coaching crew to adjust and take the team where they belong. The Nigeria Football Federation needs to shift their attention to the youth teams as well.”

“Lucky Eaglets but how far can luck carry you,” Isah Abdulmumeen stated.
