The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reacted to viral online claims that its official website has been hacked by Anonymous, an online network notorious for unleashing cyberattacks against government institutions.

A statement by the CBN's acting director of corporate affairs, Osita Nwanisobi, on Saturday, October 17, denied the report, stating in clear terms that the apex bank's website is secure.

Describing the claim as false, the CBN in the statement assured Nigerians that there is no cause for alarm.

The statement partly read:

“Contrary to claims in the social media alleging that the website of the Central Bank of Nigeria has been breached by malicious persons, we wish to state categorically that our website is secure.“We also wish to advise the online community to desist from peddling fake news aimed at undermining the integrity of the CBN, which is our collective asset.”
