Rapists be castrated, kidnapper be jailed- MURIC backs special corruption courts

MURIC has backed the creation of special courts for corruption trials.

The body said this would enable justice to be "speedily and efficiently" passed.

MURIC also said rapists should be castrated while kidnappers should be given long jail terms

Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has thrown its weight behind the establishment of special courts for the trial of corruption cases across the country.

The Nigerian Muslim rights group made this known in a statement by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Tuesday, September 8.

Speaking on the heels of a similar call made by the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Umar Abba Mohammed, MURIC said the establishment of special courts will help fight graft and mismanagement in government.

The body noted that many cases are being delayed in court due to legal technicalities, adding that the special courts will help in fast-tracking justice and restoring sanity.

"Although the war on corruption has registered some convictions and scored victory in some areas, it is very glaring that many cases are being delayed in court courtesy of legal technicalities. Many certificated kleptomaniacs are still hiding under the indulging umbrella of legal razzmatazz to delay and consequently frustrate and escape justice.

“Special courts will remove such obstacles and ensure that cases are speedily and efficiently disposed of. We, therefore, reiterate our call for the establishment of special courts for trying those who steal public funds," MURIC said.

The body also advocated that special prisons be constructed for those who steal pensioners money while the inmates of the prison be chained 24 hours all days.

"Rapists should be castrated while kidnappers should be given long jail terms. This reclassification of punishments will deter criminally-minded Nigerians," the group also advocated.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that MURIC denied link with Islamic State for West Africa Province (ISWAP), an insurgent organisation in West Africa.

The group, in a statement on Tuesday, August 11, also denied collecting $200,000 from the terrorist group to "recruit young Fulani men living in the southwest" as claimed by San Louis Keita, former intelligence chief in Mali.
