Multichoice has been ordered by the Nigerian government to suspend its plan to hike tariff on the different bouquet on DSTV.

The order was issued on Thursday by the Acting Director-General of the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission, NBC, Armstrong Idachaba.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, also revealed that the government is working on plans to break the monopoly enjoyed by Multichoice on sporting rights in Nigeria.

Ichaba and Lai Mohammed made the disclosure while addressing an Ad Hoc Committee of the National Assembly which is scrutinizing the tariff hike

Idachaba said, “I want to agree with the Committee and call on DSTV to suspend the hike in tariffs.”

Lai Mohammed on his part said that he has already signed a code which will break the sporting rights monopoly enjoyed by Multichoice.

“Our amendments to the Broadcasting Act, will affect the break in the monopoly of MultiChoice. Amendments to Section 628 of the Broadcasting Act, is in our broad national interest.”

The lawmakers who lamented the high tariff described it as an affront which must be suspended immediately.
