We are not circulating N2,000:00 and N5,000:00 banknotes, CBN says

The Central Bank has dismissed rumours about the purported circulation of N2,000:00 and N5,000:00 banknotes as false.

Telling the general public to exercise caution, it advised it to disregard the news and report anyone circulating the notes to security agencies.

"Videos and pictures of purported circulation of N2,000:00 and N5,000:00 banknotes are false and fake. Members of the public are advised to disregard such falsehood and to report anyone found in possession of such banknotes to the law enforcement agencies," the bank tweeted.

Recall that in 2013, ex-CBN Governor Sanusi Lamido announced the bank’s intention to introduce N5000 notes.

The CBN governor said it would enhance the quality of banknotes, incorporate more effective features for the visually impaired as well as reduce the cost of production, distribution and disposal of banknotes.

The Apex Bank has now refuted these rumours.
