Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has told Lagosians to stay at home and observe social distancing this Easter due to ensure the curb of the coronavirus pandemic.

This was contained in Easter message to Christians across Lagos State as they celebrate the resurrection of Christ under lockdown.

His statement was posted on his official Instagram handle, @jidesanwoolu, as Lagos enters day 11 of the coronavirus lockdown.

Lagos, as well as many parts of the world, will celebrate the 2020 Easter without gathering in public places as governments order the observation of social distancing to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Sanwo-Olu's statement reads:

"I want to use this opportunity to congratulate Christians in the state on the commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ and implore them to emulate Christ’s virtues of humility, perseverance, compassion and sacrifice. Whilst I urge citizens to reflect on how best to positively impact the lives of friends, family, neighbours and colleagues, let us as Christian faithfuls continue to live in peace and harmony with believers in other faiths across the state.

"Whilst we want you to enjoy the Easter celebration, I implore residents to continue to observe the restriction order, by not meeting up with friends/family and not visit public spots, hitherto reserved for this type of celebration. The disregard of this restriction order could have serious implications and it is imperative we are guided by the restriction order/social distancing strategy, during this Easter celebration and for as long as the directive lasts.

"The last few weeks have been quite challenging for every one of us, be you an essential worker, or you are working from home, juggling childcare, homeschooling and work at the same time. I want to say thank you to every single person who has complied with the Federal Government’s ‘stay-at-home' directive and our social distancing guidelines. Essentially, you have helped our frontline health workers save lives of Lagosians in the midst of the COVID19 pandemic break out.

"Finally let me thank Lagosians, for their perseverance during this trying period and I wish you a peaceful and happy Easter celebration. May the resurrection of Christ bring you abundant joy, peace, strength and love. Thank you."
