President candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 presidential election, Omoyele Sowore has reacted to President Buhari's latest public apology to Nigerians.

Recall that Buhari in a early last week apologized to Nigerians for the hardship his administration has caused Nigerians over the last eight years.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, April 25 after he appearance in court in a defamation and cyberstalking case brought against him by police at the request of former lawmaker Ned Nwoko against him and SaharaReporters, an online news outlet.

According to Sowore, President Buhari's apology is insufficient to 'cure' the crimes his government had committed against Nigerians during his time in office.

“And this very terrible regime held by Buhari will be leaving, according to him. And he was apologising last for the crimes that he committed against Nigerian people. My response is that his crimes are beyond apology,” Mr Sowore said.

The activist added that his persistent efforts to ensure Nigerians were given the right to express themselves and be free from any intimidation, particularly from the ruling class, was the major reason he had been facing several lawsuits initiated by political actors in the state.

He said, “The reason why this case was instituted by Ned Nwoko in the first place was because we opposed his using the same method to harass an influencer on Instagram known as Jaroma.

"He took offence at that and decided to get me arrested. And when I was arrested, I told the police that there is no law known to man which says I can not help a man… as a result I refused to write a statement in the police station and asked them to detain me.

"They could not detain me, they released me eventually. When they could not get away with that, they arrested our lawyer, Marshall Abubakar, who worked with Femi Falana. They detained him for days before he got out.

“This is to remind Nigerians that we will continue to do the job that is necessary. To the credit of the judge, he granted us the long adjournment last time so that we could attend to the election, elections are over. The selections are over now. They have selected another president for Nigeria. These are some of the reasons why we get prosecuted and persecuted by the political class because we don’t agree with their method of doing things that do not work for Nigerian citizens.

“I also constantly remind those of you who follow me to court that we have several of these cases, some of them civil, criminal. I still have a treason charge. My passport is still being seized after four years in Nigeria.

Sowore who listed some of the suits filed against him, added, “But we will continue to protect the rights of Nigerian citizens to freely speak their minds on issues affecting them. That is what Nigerians need more than anything at this time because we have been debased over time."
