Popular on-air personality Rufai Oseni stated that Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), cannot determine the outcome of the 2027 senatorial election following his threats to Senator Ireti Kingibe, the senator representing the nation’s capital.
Oseni's comment comes after Wike threatened to ensure Kingibe loses her seat in the 2027 polls. Wike and Kingibe have been at odds since the 2023 elections over control of the state.
In an interview on Arise TV, Kingibe criticized the FCT Minister for ignoring the plight of natives while focusing on less impactful projects. She also criticized the roads being constructed across the FCT, stating that they were not addressing the essential needs of the majority of the people, such as healthcare, water, education, and security.
Reacting to Kingibe in Abuja on Monday, July 1, at the flag-off ceremony of the construction of the Mabushi bus terminal, the former Rivers State Governor said: “If we have done well, we have done well. If we haven’t done well, we haven’t done well. I am proud to say that in the short time that President Tinubu has appointed us, we have done well.”
“You said there are no schools and hospitals. You, as a legislator, what have you done? How many bills have you sponsored to improve our education and health sectors?” he asked.
“I challenge that legislator. If you are very popular, in 2027, come and run under Abuja; we will fail you," he said.
Oseni has, however, called on Wike, reminding him that the people voted for Kingibe.
"The very first thing I want to say is, dear Nyesom Wike, you are not God. You cannot on God's earth, threaten a woman and say you will come for elections that you are the one in charge of the territory. You are just a minister. This woman got the mandate of the people of FCT."
"And what do you mean by what happened before would not happen again? Let me tell you what happened before. What happened before was, the people came out en masse to vote for what their choice is, and it's not about you."
"And as of when she won the election, you were not FCT Minister. You came in afterward."
