Nigerian writer and social commentator Solomon Buchi has strongly criticised Nigerians who are defending singer Simi after her old tweets resurfaced online.
In a video shared on his Instagram page, Buchi condemned supporters of the singer, accusing them of downplaying the seriousness of her past comments.
According to him, such reactions weaken efforts toward child protection and highlight what he described as gender bias in how society handles sensitive issues.
The controversy stems from a 2012 tweet in which Simi reportedly joked about a four-year-old boy’s innocent crush, describing it as sexual harassment.
Buchi argued that framing the situation in sexual terms was disturbing, especially considering the age gap.
Questioning the logic behind the statement, he asked how a four-year-old child could be accused of sexually harassing a 23-year-old woman.
He expressed frustration at those defending her, stating that they were ignoring what he sees as a clear issue in the language used.
Buchi also criticised Simi for allegedly doubling down instead of apologising for her choice of words. He suggested that an apology acknowledging poor phrasing would have been more appropriate.
Expanding his argument, the social commentator accused some feminists and male supporters of hypocrisy, claiming they would have reacted differently if the roles were reversed.
He maintained that society often treats alleged misconduct involving boys less seriously than cases involving girls.
Buchi concluded by noting that many men have experienced abuse as minors, yet such cases are frequently overlooked, particularly when women are involved.
