Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso had a message for Nigerians ahead of the Europa League final.

The Spanish coach offered some insights into his team and addressed why Victor Boniface is not starting matches upon his return from injury, in response to a question from Europe-based Nigerian journalist Oma Akatugba.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder explained that Boniface needs time to readjust to the team after spending two months on the sidelines.

He also emphasized the club's satisfaction with the 23-year-old Super Eagles striker.

"For sure, after the injury, it takes time. But, of course, we have so many players, and everyone wants to be on the field. For sure, I like it when someone is not playing and shows me character to prove, 'Coach, you were wrong. I have to be on the pitch.' That is the challenge. But I'm happy with Boni, you know the impact that he has had for us. He has helped us so much, and we're helping him to be back on track. So, tell your people from Nigeria that we are happy with him."

Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella will be in action for the new German champions when they take on Atalanta at the AVIVA Stadium in Dublin, Ireland.

Ademola Lookman will also be pulling the strings for Gian Piero Gasperini's side from the opposing end as he also eyes his first silverware at club level.
