Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez has named Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes in a 27-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as the European sidestep up preparations with a friendly against Nigeria.
The reigning UEFA Nations League champions will travel to global showpiece, where they have been drawn in Group K alongside the DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia.
Portugal will warm up for the competition with a series of friendlies, including a high-profile meeting with Nigeria on June 10 at the Dr Magalhães Pessoa Stadium in Portugal.
The match comes a week before their opener against DR Congo at Houston’s NRG Stadium.
Five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Ronaldo, is expected to play a central role in what could be his final World Cup appearance, while Bruno Fernandes is included after a strong club season.
Both players were also part of Portugal’s last meeting with Nigeria, a 4-0 win in November 2022, although Ronaldo did not feature in that match.
Martínez has also included several Premier League-based players, with the squad reflecting a blend of experience and emerging talent across Europe’s top leagues.
The Seleção’s squad is built around experienced leaders and top-level European performers. The goalkeeping group features Diogo Costa, José Sá, Rui Silva and Ricardo Velho.
In defence, Roberto Martínez has selected Rúben Dias, João Cancelo, Nuno Mendes, Diogo Dalot, Gonçalo Inácio, Tomás Araújo, Renato Veiga, Matheus Nunes and Nelson Semedo.
The midfield options include Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, João Neves, Vitinha, Rúben Neves and Samuel Costa while in attack, the forwards are Ronaldo, Rafael Leão, João Félix, Gonçalo Ramos, Pedro Neto, Francisco Trincão, Francisco Conceição and Gonçalo Guedes.
Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle is yet to announce his squad for the match, but he has confirmed he will name a strong squad for the friendly despite the Super Eagles not qualifying for the World Cup, with the match expected to serve as a key test for both sides ahead of the tournament in North America.
