A video capturing Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike's refusal to drink tap water during a public commissioning event in Abuja has sparked widespread discussion on social media.
The event took place on Monday, June 22, 2026, marking the official launch of the newly completed Karu Water Supply Network. Vice President Kashim Shettima was present as the Guest of Honour.
After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, organizers handed glasses to the Vice President, Minister Wike, and other dignitaries. The plan was for them to sample the water directly from the taps to vouch for its safety. While Shettima and other officials took and drank the water, Wike merely filled his glass but chose not to drink.
The video quickly went viral, prompting varied reactions across Nigerian social media platforms.
Some interpret Wike's refusal as a lack of confidence in the water supply’s quality, while others believe it was a personal health choice or a security measure.
