Why we arraigned woman who accused husband of defiling daughters - Enugu Police

The Enugu State Police Command shed light on its decision to charge a woman who accused her husband of abusing their two children.

According to SP Daniel Ndukwe, the police spokesperson, the complainant, Okonkwo Chisom, 29 years old, reported at the Emene Police Division that her husband, Okonkwo Ozioma, had allegedly sexually abused their daughters, aged 5 and 3, and had threatened her life if she revealed the abuse.

However, Ndukwe clarified that after the husband was detained and thorough investigations were conducted, the allegations proved to be unfounded and misleading.

Investigations showed that the timeframes Chisom cited—specifically in 2024 and 2025—when the abuse supposedly occurred, coincided with the periods she traveled alone with all the children to their hometown in Imo State.

Furthermore, the investigation uncovered that their seven-year-old son, through two voluntary handwritten statements, cleared his father of any wrongdoing and accused his mother of coaching him and his sisters to make false claims—supporting this with video evidence.

Ndukwe also revealed that Chisom tried to withdraw the case and halt further police inquiries once she realized that the truth was surfacing and could turn against her.

In conclusion, Ndukwe stated that since she failed to establish her allegations beyond reasonable doubt, Chisom Okonkwo was guilty of defaming her husband and providing false information to law enforcement.

“She was thereafter arraigned before the Magistrate Court of Enugu State on a two-count charge of defamation and giving false information. She was granted bail by the court, and the case was adjourned for further hearing.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, commended the detectives of the State Intelligence Department (SID) for their thorough and impartial investigation of the case. He reiterated the Command’s commitment to fairness, justice, and professionalism in handling all cases, warning that any complainant found to have made false or malicious allegations would be prosecuted in accordance with the law,” the Police Spokesman stated.
