Why Tinubu can't be trusted with the presidency in 2023

Bola Ahmed Tinubu's journey to Aso Rock has no doubt been hit by self-inflicted scandals.

The former Governor of Lagos State and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, despite not announcing plans to replace, President Buhari at the helm of affairs has been hit with so much stick and scandals enough to bury anyone's presidential aspiration.

But that is typical of Nigeria. Nigeria's political, ethnic, cultural, and religious landscape is laced with cutthroat disparity and hate that a leader only assumes the presidency if he convincingly satisfies the unending thirst for power of a significant percentage of some of Nigeria's selfish, shallow-minded and criminal groups.

His ability to do this convincingly is something many believe he won't be able to achieve.

His blatant disobedience to the South West and the ensuing beef over his support for Buhari and his Fulani cronies prior to 2015 is yet to be forgiven. The anger for Tinubu goes way back to when he was governor of Lagos.

A well-publicized disagreement with then-President Olusegun Obasanjo on several national issues and his disagreement with Abraham Adesanya and Ayo Adebanjo Chieftains of the Alliance for Democracy(AD) the party that put him in power in1999 has smeared him with rebellious tendencies.

He ended up forming his own party, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) after leaving the AD.

Despite being the leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress and a key figure in Nigeria's political space, his so-called friends in the North lack the trust for him. His radical nature which he has exhibited over the years pokes fear into the hearts of these friends.

In short, they don't trust him. Amongst other things, several probes have been instigated against him by the young EFCC Chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa to derail and smear his personality. Whether that will work is yet to be seen.

The ThisDay Live newspaper publication against Tinubu in 1997 that resurfaced has deepened the mistrust in Tinubu. The headline of that paper read: "I don't believe in one Nigeria".

What a way to put the final nail on his presidential coffin. At a time where several groups from all parts of the country are screaming for a divided Nigeria, the PDP's timely-yet-politically motivated photo of Tinubu questioning Nigeria unity has once again tipped the scale more towards the hypocrisy of Tinubu.

It is now assumed that Tinubu now believes in one Nigeria because of his selfish interest and proximity to power.
