The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Wednesday, May 21, released the official squad list for the upcoming Unity Cup and a friendly match against Russia.
Notable absentees from the squad were Galatasaray's Victor Osimhen and Atalanta's Ademola Lookman.
The duo has had impressive campaigns with their respective clubs this season.
Osimhen has guided Galatasaray through a remarkable domestic campaign, winning both the Turkish Süper Lig and Turkish Cup while scoring 36 goals in 40 appearances across all competitions.
Reigning African Footballer of the Year, Ademola Lookman, has also managed 20 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions for Gian Piero Gasperini's side.
UK-based Nigerian sports journalist Samuel Omaenikun, in an exclusive interview with Legit.ng, suggested that Osimhen and Lookman were likely excused due to a physically draining season.
"Victor and Ademola have been phenomenal this season. Osimhen battled all season long and still delivered two titles to Galatasaray, while Lookman’s consistency helped Atalanta book a UCL spot," Omaenikun stated.
"It’s only fair they are given time to recover. This shows foresight from the NFF and coaching crew, prioritizing player welfare over unnecessary risks in friendly matches."
