Why Nnamdi Kanu’s trial must not be botched – Ex-US Ambassador tells Buhari govt

John Campbell, a former United States, US, Ambassador to Nigeria, has reacted to the rearrest of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

Campbell cautioned the Nigerian government on the handling of Kanu’s trial.

He issued the warning in a tweet on his official Twitter handle.

According to Campbell: “Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the separatist Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was apprehended abroad on June 27 and has been returned to Nigeria for trial. If the government botches Kanu’s trial, it risks further inflaming separatism.”

Kanu was apprehended on Sunday and repatriated to Nigeria to continue his trial.

The rearrest of the IPOB leader was disclosed by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

Though Malami was yet to disclose where Kanu was picked up, but family of the IPOB leader claimed he was rearrested in Kenya.

Upon his return to Nigeria, he was brought before the Justice Binta Nyako-led Abuja Federal High Court to continue his trial.
