Following the mass defection that has hit the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) after the primaries, 22 Senators of the ruling party who have also threatened to exit the party met with President Buhari in Abuja on Tuesday, June 28.

The aggrieved senators say they are unhappy with the outcome of the primaries in their state ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Led by Chief Whip of the majority, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu, the lawmakers said they felt disenfranchised by the process. Missing amongst the Senators that met with the president was Senate President, Ahmed Lawan who is believed to be aggrieved by the outcome of the primaries that saw Tinubu emerge as the presidential candidate of the party.

As the rumors intensify about his discontent, a leading member of the party, Dr. Ibrahim Oloriegbe, representing the Kwara Central Senatorial District has watered down the absence of Lawan.

Senator Oloriegbe who is also the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health said the absence of the senate president shouldn't be viewed through political lenses while noting that Lawan is in charge of the entire senate and not the leader of the majority side.

He made this known in an interview on Channels TV monitored by

"If you know about the legislature, the Chief Whip, part of his action is to whip members to ensure that members for the certain party line. Ideally, the person who should probably do that should be the majority leader also but as we speak the majority leader of the party has defected to PDP and that’s why the Chief Whip stepped in.

In terms of the hierarchy, the Senate President officially ought to be in the frame because he leads the entire senate."

In response to a question about the grievances of the senate president as a result of the fallout from the primaries, he said: "I don’t know if that has been resolved or not. I am not in the right position to speak on that, I think he may be asked personally about that."
