Former Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili asked the host, Seun Okinbaloye, who Bayo Onanuga is during an interview on Channels Television. Okinbaloye was reading excerpts from a post Onanuga made on social media.
Ezekwesili is a major critic of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, while Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy is a staunch critic of Peter Obi, the Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate.
Following the news of the presidency purchasing a new aircraft valued at $100 million amid the economic hardship ravaging Nigerian citizens, the former minister has slammed the government for its luxurious spending.
She said, "If I were president and I saw my people in this state of affairs, I would not go out and buy an aircraft. When you are a leader, you are first in line to inconvenience yourself. That is what leadership is about. Who told you leadership is about luxury?
This version of political leadership in the country, I think Nigerians need to wise up. There is nothing about leadership that gives an advantage to the people. The leader is the one who takes the cost so that the people can get the benefit. These bunch of people in the national assembly, executive, government houses, and state are not political leaders.
The greatest risk and danger to the sustainability and availability of Nigeria is the political class. These are rascals by every definition of the word, and I am not mincing words about it, because if you look at the choices that our political class constantly makes, you can see clearly that they don't care about the country."
Sharing her thoughts on the state of the nation, the former minister noted that there was nothing credible about the 2023 presidential elections and the outcomes that followed. She also mentioned that it was very clear that the concept of “snatch it, grab it, run with it” was going to haunt us.
According to Ezekwesili, the ruling APC government, presently condemning former President Buhari’s management of the economy, actually agreed with his police direction while in office.
Speaking on the oil and gas sector, Ezekwesili advised President Bola Tinubu to get competent advice and begin the process of designing a full deregulation of the petroleum sector.
It is worth noting that the country is currently suffering from fuel scarcity and price hikes, causing discomfort to many Nigerians who are unable to afford the incessant price increases.
She described the battle between businessman Aliko Dangote and the Nigerian government as an embarrassment.
Ezekwesili noted that the state of the Nigerian economy under President Tinubu has worsened due to the recklessness of the administration.
“They haven’t done a good job. They’ve worsened it. They could avoid the fiscal recklessness and rascality. If you are Nigerian, you should be very vexed at this government. All we have seen since this government came into office has been fiscal profligacy. I know what families are going through. I cry every day. I cry every time I see some of the texts my husband, as a pastor of a church, gets. And to see the political class of this country, be totally reckless with scarce public resources. A country that is highly leveraged, we are overburdened with debt; we are crumbling under the weight of debt," she said.
