Who built Lagos again? Nigerians ask as flood takes over Lagos after heavy downpour

Flooded area in Lagos Flooded area in Lagos

Following the heavy downpour of rain on Saturday, September 16, several parts of Lagos have been taken over by flood.

In various viral videos, residents were seen struggling to make their way through the flooded areas.

At the Lagos-Badagry expressway, vehicles got trapped on the road, with people seen trying to push the cars through the flood.

In Alaba International marker, goods worth millions of Naira got destroyed as the flood filled the stores.

Shop owners were captured in a video trying to salvage what was left of their goods while walking in the flood.

Reacting to the incidents, several Nigerians blamed the choked drainages for the flooded areas.

Below are some comments from concern Nigerians on social media.

vally_donfashion: I wouldn’t say Lagos State, but those we have in powers are very useless, but this Lagos State own is worst, they will be charging millions of naira in taxes, but they won’t fix anything, those Lapsca people will be going from one site to site, collecting over 700k bribe from those building, but the road where they passed to come collect the bribe is rubbish, if you dey collect land use charge and other taxes, use the money and fix the roads, the street roads, stop leaving it for individuals to fix and later come frustrate lives of those building in those area.

shakar_el: Who built Lagos again? Remind me abeg

love_connection_arena: Maybe we will finally learn to stop blocking drainages with rubbish.

iam_linchpin: But Tinubu built & transformed Lagos into a first class mega city… where’s this place again?

methuselah20_john: Indeed he built Lagos! A Lagos where touts are free to threaten and kill anyone and get away with. A Lagos that taxes every citizens through Agbero, yet on flooded roads and inaccessible routes. CITY BOY BUILT LAGOS!

itz_eke_: Who built Lagos again?

rayomas_outlet: that rain yesterday wasn’t a child’s play. Chaiiiiiii… The problem with this Lagos State is the bad drainage system that’s why flooding keeps happening everywhere.

buno.gal: This is not about the government, Lagos is a coastal state so your duty is to ensure you don't pour dirt in the canal so water can flow easily but we get coconut head. We drink pure water fiiaaam we throw the nylon for ground, you eat biscuit na ground nylon dey go then breeze go blow everything enter canal. Some people even dump their bin inside canal and you say make flood no happen. Dey plaaaaaay!! State wey na water surround am before una kan add to the problem by blocking the canals then una say make floor no use una act feem abi *bombastic side eye

official_davidkingking: Una go learn. Nigerians don’t really understand how things work. They don’t prepare themselves for the worse, every traders understands how Lagos was build, about 40-60 percent of the state was filled up with sand, which means those areas are water bank. We only want to make money everyday but nobody is ready to build what will prevent all this. Tomorrow some will come out and say bad government or tribal crisis.

obaksolo: The drainage system in Alaba is very bad

larie_rubies: They've turned the newly constructed drainage into a waste dump. I passed their few months ago and I knew this was going to happen. How can you turn a drainage as big as that into your refuse dump and expect government to come and pack them for you. Monies meant to something else should he channelled into drainage services everytime? People that have brains but can't use it. Government will still come and spoon-feed you.

dovikfilms: Lagos that the legendary Tinubu built

mc_shortman91: Nigeria government una non dey shammmmee the abroad una dey run go so now so e be shemmmmmmeeeee
