Popular journalist, Dr. Reuben Abati has enquired about Nigeria's national interest in invading Niger Republic.

This follows a resolution by member states of the Economic Community of West African States to deploy troops in Niger following the refusal of the military leaders to restore democracy despite the sanctions imposed on them and their collaborators by the regional body.

Reacting to the decision by the ECOWAS to have a standby troop, Dr Abati on the Whats Trending segment of the Morning Show asked what Nigeria stands to benefit from invading the neighboring country.

"What national interest are we pursuing? Whose interest are we pursuing?" he asked.

"We understand the principled position that ECOWAS is against military take-over but what is the overriding interest for Nigeria in committing troops? Our troops are already overstretched."

"The 75 additional aircraft that the Nigerian airforce said they just bought, they want to go and put those aircraft at risk. We don't even know how long this would last. And we would come back from that operation and our air fleet will be thoroughly depleted."

"So cost is also something to worry about."
