Nigerians took to social media to share their thoughts on Ben Ayade, the Governor of Cross River declaring his intention to contest the presidential elections in 2023.

Governor Ayade made his intentions known to the press at the State House in Abuja after a meeting with President Buhari on Tuesday, April 26.

Ayade said he was at the Presidential Villa to seek political direction from President Buhari on how to align in the run-up to the 2023 poll, several reports stated that he disclosed he had got the nod from the president.

His inclusion adds to the growing number of politicians who have declared their intention to run on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023.

With the ruling party zoning the presidency to the Southwest, he faces fierce competition from Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo and the National Leader of the APC Bola Ahmed Tinubu who is touted as favorites to replace President Buhari at the helm of affairs.

The others vying for the presidency are Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, Chief Whip of the Senate, Orji Uzor Kalu, Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello and Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi.

While a candidate to lead the APC into the election in 2023 will be deterermined by delegates at the congress in May, Ayade said he will shelve his ambitions if former president, Goodluck Jonathan who is a statesman decides to run.

There have been rumors that some Northern leaders are backing the former president to give the presidency another shot, but this time on the ticket of the APC. The former president has since not quelled the speculations since it began rearing its head.

“I have great respect for President Jonathan. So, I have no challenges whatsoever.

“At any point in time the political leadership of my party, the APC, feels that President Jonathan is the appropriate candidate that will take us to victory, I will turn my support for him.

“I am never ever going to fight the establishment, the institution, the aristocracy, the spiritual vortex of which God has placed a leader on the country. I will never question the powers of the leader of the country.
