President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) has stated that he has no intention to contest in future elections and that he would stand down by 2023.

Buhari disclosed this while giving a New Year message to Nigerians on Wednesday, January 1st, 2020.

According to him, he strongly believes in Democratic principles which he would work to promote and sustain in West Africa.

“I will be standing down in 2023 and will not be available in any future elections. But I am determined to help strengthen the electoral process both in Nigeria and across the region, where several ECOWAS members go to the polls this year,” he said.

This is coming amidst speculations that a cabal is working towards ensuring he contests for a third term in office.
