'We were paraded like thieves' - Nigerian man laments alleged deportation from Mauritius

A Nigerian traveller has sparked widespread reactions online after sharing an emotional account of alleged discrimination and harsh treatment while travelling to Mauritius through Dubai.

In a viral post circulating on social media, the traveller alleged that Nigerian passengers were singled out upon arrival in Mauritius, separated from other travellers, and subjected to extensive questioning before their visas were reportedly denied.

The individual also recounted difficulties encountered at the Nigerian airport before departure, alleging harassment and delays linked to immigration procedures.

According to the post, the traveller said: “When looking for a better life, pray you don’t lose your life along the line.”

The traveller explained that after enduring turbulence during the journey, they arrived in Dubai and later boarded a connecting flight to Mauritius.

“On arrival, they moved all Nigerians to one side, interviewing us like we were ex-convicts or thieves, even when we had all the required documents. They deported us like we committed crimes against humanity,” the post read.

The traveller further alleged that immigration officials in Nigeria delayed the departure process and demanded money before stamping travel documents.

“Before I left Nigeria, they almost made me stranded at the airport because immigration officials were demanding money and making it seem like if you didn’t pay, they wouldn’t stamp your passport,” the statement added.

The individual claimed the delays nearly caused them to miss the flight.

“I almost missed the flight because of the delay in sending them money,” the traveller wrote.

Expressing frustration over the experience, the post also questioned why Nigerians continue to face difficulties travelling to other African countries despite possessing valid travel documents.

“This same Nigeria accommodates foreigners with or without papers moving freely, yet Nigerians with every requirement are still denied access to visit another African country,” the traveller lamented.

The viral account has since triggered conversations online, with many social media users reacting to issues surrounding immigration processes, travel discrimination, and the treatment of Nigerian travellers abroad.
