'We have bills to pay' - Dele Momodu makes a case for Nigerian journalists

Veteran journalist Dele Momodu has appealed to corporate Nigeria to respect journalists.

Momodu, the publisher of Ovation Magazine, made the appeal in a post on his Instagram on Monday, July 15.

He urged individuals and businesses to provide appropriate remuneration to journalists when they are invited to cover an event or program.

The PDP chieftain said journalists have "huge bills to pay, salaries" and other expenses to handle if they are not paid what is due to them.

"We have huge bills to pay: salaries, flights, road transportation, expensive cameras and gadgets, production, food & accommodations, risks to lives & properties, and so on. It is most unfair to pay for all services and refuse to pay ours," a portion of his post reads.

He said he set up Ovation Magazine in the late '90s to cater to the demand for event publicity.

He said: "Almost on a daily basis, I receive invitation cards from friends asking us to cover birthdays, weddings, business launches, funerals, housewarmings, and other such lavish events. We all love to show off the grace of GOD in our lives, which was the main reason we set up Ovation International magazine in 1996."

"Such events cost thousands of USD. Their budgets include event planning, venues, food & beverage, lights & sound, comperes, artists, photography/videography, hotels, engineers, fabrics & fashion designers, makeup, security, car hires, jewelry & accessories, etc. The only aspect they often forget in the huge budget is the most important, MEDIA. They treat Media as the 'lamb of GOD who takes away the sins of the world...' This is most unfortunate."
